In the 74th position worldwide and 11th in Europe is NKUA in the Webometrics "Top Universities by Top Google Scholar Citations" Ranking

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is in the 74^th position worldwide. That is according to Webometrics 'Top Universities by Top Google Scholar Citations' rankings, which was published in late January 2020. The specific ranking list, which was published for 9th time, includes 4320 Universities; among them 28 are Greek Universities (see Table 1). NKUA is ranked in the 74th world position, 11th in Europe and 1st among Greek institutions, with 2039623 citations.

The "top five" of the best Greek Universities is fulfilled by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki at 324 with 679598 citations, the University of Patras at 399 with 535480 citations, the National Technical University of Athens at position 400 with 535454 citations and the University of Crete at 437 positionwith 484842 citations.

This ranking list is based on the citation number of research work , professors and researchers of the Institutions. Citations are identified through Google Scholar's search engine and the top researchers’ profiles in this engine.  More specifically citations from the top 110 public profiles of each university are collected. This number of profiles is for allowing size independent comparisons.  The top ten (10) profiles of the list are excluded for improving representativeness by removing outliers. For the rest of the top profiles, the numbers of citations are added and the institutions are ranked in descending order of this indicator. These clues were collected from 10^th up to 20th January 2020.

                What makes an impression is the fact that the number of NKUA’s citations covers the 33% of all citations of 28 Greek universities that are included in the ranking.
